      County Court cases - January to March 2026

      There have been 527,000 county court claims issued in England and Wales during the first quarter (January to March) of 2026. These are 450,000 Money Claims, representing 85% of the total number to March 2026. There have been 48,000 Non-Money Claims (representing 15% of total claims to March 2026). This total number so far has involved: 72,000 defended claims. 13,000 trials.

      Family Court cases - January to March 2026

      There have been 71,259 new cases started in the Family Courts in the first quarter of 2026. Family law deals with the following areas: Public law – A local authority's intervention to protect children. Private law – Parental disputes concerning the upbringing of children. Matrimonial cases – Divorces, annulments and separations. Financial Remedy (formerly known as ‘ancillary relief’).

      Criminal Court cases - January to March 2026

      The number of Crown Court cases in the first quarter of 2026 has reached a criminal caseload of 80,061 open cases. There have been 370,222 open cases at the magistrates' courts from January to March 2026. There were 7,939 Crown Court trials that took place in the three months leading up to March 31, 2026. Cases waiting a year or more were over 22,000, with more than half involving sexual or violent offences.
